Wonderful School Trips

I hope your child has had a positive week and, where they have received feedback on their End of Year exams, they feel it has given them some helpful insights for the future.

As we move closer to the end of the academic year, we begin to look forward to Activities Week, which begins on 22 June. For many year groups, this means trips: Year 7 pupils head off to PGL; Year 8 pupils take part in the cricket tour or visit Hadrian’s Wall; and Year 9 pupils travel to a European destination.

Trips like these, along with many others we run throughout the year, are such an important part of school life. They give pupils experiences that simply aren’t possible in the classroom. They also provide a wonderful opportunity for pupils and staff to get to know one another in a different setting and to see new sides of each other. Much as it pains me to admit it, in 20 years’ time pupils may not remember every detail of my Physics lessons, but I am quite sure they will remember the trips they went on! It is reassuring to see that this is backed up by research. The 2025 Oxwell Survey found that 58% of pupils said school trips were the thing that most helped them feel connected to their school community – making it the most important factor in the survey. Lunchtime and after-school activities were next, with 39% of pupils highlighting their importance.

Trips do, of course, take a huge amount of organisation, and I am very grateful to so many colleagues who give up many extra hours to make them happen, simply because they know how much our pupils benefit. Accompanying trips is also a significant commitment for staff, often taking them away from their own families, and we are very fortunate at LGS to have so many teachers who are willing to do this.

We are equally proud of our pupils, who almost always represent the school brilliantly with their behaviour and enthusiasm while away. Thank you too for your continued support in enabling your children to take part in these opportunities. Costs do continue to rise, as with so many things, but we hope you feel these wonderful experiences are well worth it.

With best wishes for the weekend, and for a successful Activities Week ahead,
